Warm hospitality on the Sardinian Island

After the long winter months in Germany I was hoping to find a warm and sunny climate on Sardinia. Unfortunately, when my friend Alessandro met me at the airport of Olbia it was cold and windy and it stayed like this for the next two weeks.

Our symposium was held in Ittiri - a little town up in the mountains. The slogan "Sardinia is not Italy" was sprayed on the walls of a police station, which  reflects the attitude of the inhabitants of this island. In Ittiri the clocks seem to move differently than in the rest of the world. When walking thru the medival narrow streets one feels drawn back to the Middle Ages.

The Sardinian people show a great hospitality, have a desire to help and this combined with a sense of curiosity. There is always time to enjoy a little chit-chat around the bar. To communicate with the locals it certainly helps to speak Italian, to know the Sardinian language is even better, otherwise body language has to be used. There is an immense variety of  local culinary specialities and Mirto the local liquor made of myrte berries is part of it. The food is so good that inspite of working so hard I put on a few extra kilos.

The material we used for our sculptures was the volcanic stone called trachyt. This stone lends itself for carving, however is very abrasive, which meant that the consumption of diamond disks went up considerably. The organization of the symposium was simply perfect. We enjoyed the full support of "Pro Loco" the local tourist association.

At the end of our symposium Ittiri was holding their annual fair for the local specialities, which attracts thousands of visitors. This is the ideal occasion to also visit our sculptures exposed in the market square. We were very moved by the direct and immediate appreciation and enthusiasm we received from the local population and to see how they considered our sculptures as part of their local heritage
