ENGLISH

In April 2008 the large number of 25 stone experts was again invited to come to Mersin in the south of Turkey. We were a group of sculptors from 3 different continents and 15 different countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Ukraine, Egypt, Kenia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, France and Turkey, and our common language was a mixture of Spanish and Italian.
I was privileged to know a few people from earlier symposia.
April in Mersin was nice and warm, the workshop was overlooking the Mediterranean Sea – an overwhelming experience.  I love extreme landscapes since it is complementary to our work which is physically hard with a touch of sensuousness.  The enormous clouds of dust which we produced were stretching across the harbour and thus veiling it in a white marble dress. Inspite of 33 degrees C there was a feeling of Christmas in the air.
When we started out in the evenings our high spirits and noisiness were unrivalled. This of course was not always to the liking of the local authorities, which at times threatened to stop our festivities.
Once more the population had the possibility to watch the evolution of the sculpture – from the crude block to the finished sculpture.  If you are not the only spectator the process develops a new dimension of liveliness, and I am as happy as a child who is unwrapping his gifts. This feeling prevails for hours and days with no time limit, since hewing and processing a block of stone is a wonderful experience,  and I consider myself a lucky fellow.
